Spring 2007-February 13: Problems with PDFs in Firefox

There are reported problems with opening PDFs if you are using Firefox to browse your ELMS (or WebCT) course space. If you have recently downloaded Firefox it is possible that the Acrobat plug-in is not installed or is installed improperly. The following are instructions for enabling Firefox to work with the Adobe Acrobat reader.

If you are using Firefox 2.0:

  1. Open the Firefox Tools -> Options menu, and then select “Content” tab.
  2. Under “File Types”, select “Manage”.
  3. Select “PDF” from the list of extensions, click the “Change Action” button.
  4. Check the radio button beside “Open them with the Default Application” (Adobe Reader).

If you are using versions below 2.0, check the following solutions:

If you are using Firefox 1.0.x:

  1. Open the Firefox “Tools -> Options” menu and select “Downloads”.
  2. Click the “Plugins” button and uncheck “PDF” from the list of extensions.
  3. Next time you click a .pdf file link in Firefox, you will get an “Opening….” dialog box asking what you would like to do with the .pdf file. Choose the option to open with the default application and check the box to do that automatically from now on.

If you are using Firefox 1.5:

  1. Open the Firefox “Tools -> Options” menu and select “Downloads”.
  2. Click the “View & Edit Actions” button.
  3. Select “PDF” from the list of extensions.
  4. Click the “Change Action” button and change the action to “Open them with the Default Application” (Adobe Reader).

After you set up your browser settings, open Acrobat Reader:

Edit—>Preferences—>Internet and uncheck everything under the “Web Browser Options”.
